Don Johnson, MMM, CD, CPP

Don Johnson Early on in his 35-year career in the Canadian Forces Military Police and Security Branch from 1958 to 1993, Don Johnson became qualified as a Military Instructor. Through the span of his career he participated in developing and teaching a variety of security-related courses. From 1968 to 1970 he developed and taught courses at CFB Moose Jaw, Sask., in Base Defence, Security Awareness, Community Policing and School Safety.

In 1971, he attended and then critiqued existing Canadian Forces Air Transport Command courses in VIP Aircraft Security, suggesting many improvements to the courses. Then in 1972 and 1973 he taught these updated courses to Canadian Forces Security Officers and Military Police NCOs.

Johnson is qualified by the Department of National Defence in Canadian Forces Training and Development. From 1989 to 1991, as the Commandant of the Canadian Forces School of Intelligence and Security, he managed and directed a staff of 75 instructors who taught a wide range of police and security-related courses to 600 graduates annually. Courses included various trade level courses for Military Police and Security Officers as well as a Physical Security Supervisor course, a Security Officers Advanced Course (for officers of the rank of Major) as well as Base Defence Force training courses and an Investigators Course. He personally had a role in developing and modifying courses as well as researching and approving associated training material to accommodate changing priorities and budget allocations

As a self-employed security consultant, Johnson designed and then taught a Threat Risk Awareness Course (using Freelance Graphics and Corel software) for Health Canada and several of their specialized buildings. He also developed national policy and training guidelines for a Security Awareness Program throughout the Department of National Defence. In 1997, he teamed with a serving Lieutenant Colonel in the Canadian Forces Security Branch, critiquing the Security Officers Advanced Course, making numerous improvements and updates and then co-taught this course (using PowerPoint, CD ROM and video) to Officers in the rank of Major.

Johnson developed and taught courses on Threat and Risk Awareness, some aspects of IT Security, Professional Development and Emergency Response Procedures for a high profile high tech company in the National Capital Area, (using PowerPoint, CD ROM and video).

Over a two-year period (1996-1998) he developed and taught a series of courses in the Law and Security faculty of Algonquin College in Ottawa. Courses included: Industrial Security, Investigative Techniques and Professional Ethics in the Law & Security professions.

He gave presentations to Okanagan University College, President's Forum, and to the Canadian Club of Kelowna on "Countering the Threat from Terrorism". On two occasions Johnson has taught security-related topics (using PowerPoint and CD ROM) at the Focus Training Institute, Kelowna, B.C. and have been guest speaker at the Central Okanagan Academy, speaking on 'Leadership'.

In March/ April 2004, he participated with Croze Consulting Services (CCS) in developing and presenting a Professional Training Seminar for Security Guards employed by the City of Vancouver. The seminar consisted of eight, three-hour sessions (using PowerPoint and CD ROM) covering all aspects of security including patrol techniques, communications, professional development, legal aspects surrounding search and seizure and pertinent provincial and federal legislation that pertain to the security industry in B.C.
